The Sports Guy

DISCLAIMER: Please forgive the quality of some of the KUSA videos.
They were converted, then reconverted, and taken from a time when dinosaurs roamed this planet.
However, I think you’ll get the general idea.

Prep Rally Anchor

One of the highest watermarks in my career happened from 2007 to 2011. During those years, I served as the main prep sports reporter and anchor for KUSA-TV in Denver. The “Prep Rally” segment on the 9NEWS weekend morning show expanded during that time and it was a thrill to be a part of all the fun.

This was a full “Prep Rally” segment, which shows plenty of content of the day, a bit of stamina, and even a wonderful salute from a viewer at the end.

Voice Of Wyoming

One of my favorite stories during my time at KGWN in Cheyenne was this profile on Dave Walsh - the “Voice of Wyoming.” He had called so many great sporting moments for the state and I was lucky to share a few of them while I was out there.

So, in January of 2015, we put our mic on him for a men’s basketball showdown against San Diego State and had him reflect on his career. He stepped away from calling basketball in August, 2020, but is still behind the mic for Wyoming football.

A Tragic Loss

Just because I covered sports in Colorado didn’t mean the stories were all fun. This was the case in 2010, in the small rural community of Flagler.

The starting quarterback of the high school football team, Lance Rodwell, died in a rollover crash after leading his team to a season-opening victory.

A few weeks later, we caught up with Lance’s father about the pain and continuing to attend Flagler’s games helped in healing.

The Other Warren Harding

I once interviewed Warren Harding.

No, not THAT one. The one who was the long-time JV boys basketball coach at Denver East during my tenure at KUSA. It made for a fun story to compare and contrast the two “commanders in chief.”

It also helped that the conference he coached in had schools named Lincoln, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Kennedy.

The Anchor Returns

After a 3-year hiatus from local TV news, I returned to the business in 2014. KGWN in Cheyenne, Wyoming took me in as a sports anchor and I am grateful for that.

Yes, I anchored from the studio on football, basketball, baseball, and hockey … but, here I am anchoring from Cheyenne Frontier Days, wearing plenty of Western apparel while I deliver rodeo highlights.

Sleepless
In Seattle

My time at KGWN in Cheyenne, Wyoming was very short, but I was able to get a taste of March Madness. The Wyoming men’s basketball team made it to The Dance.

I followed the team out to Seattle and our live shot the night before the big game was wild! We even caught up with Wyoming’s then-governor, who made sure he made it to the Pacific Northwest.
